In order to make sure students develop at their own pace differentiated learning can be used in the classroom in order to meet the needs of all learners.
Learners with similar needs are grouped according to their prior knowledge.
Establishing what level they are currently at in numeracy development requires not only the student to answer questions but also to show their thinking.
In the past teachers found that many students slipped behind in mathematics because they did not have a sufficient basic understanding of numeracy, and did not have the range of strategies required to deal with different problems.
Here you can see a random group of students doing a diagnostic activity. Here I am learning if they have the skill of one to one counting and the knowledge that the number of objects stays the same regardless of the spacial arrangement.
Planning for differentiated learning takes time and patience but I consider it to be the most effective strategy for improving student outcomes in both literacy and numeracy.
