Home Learning week 48

Maths Skip counting

At school last week we worked on skip counting for multiplication in 2s and 5s. This week we will be moving on to 10s. At home this week I would like the students to go over what they have learned so far:

At school this week we have been using skip-counting sequences to solve simple multiplication problems.  At home this week we would like your child to practice skip-counting forwards and backwards in twos and fives. Try doing this with them by clapping a beat together or by following a number strip (can be found in your child's folder or here number strip PDF). Change the starting numbers for the sequences.

Here are some examples
Start from 2:               2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, …
Count down from 14:   14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2.
Start from 5:               5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, …
Start from 15:             15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 50, …

Count down from 45:   45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5.

As an extension you could try one of these problems:

1) On Maple street there are 6 houses. 2 people live in each house. How many people live on Maple street all together? (6x2=12) 6 groups of 2

2) There are 5 boxes of sweets, in each box there are 5 sweets. How many sweets are there all together? (5x5=25) 5 groups of 5
